Gynaecological ultrasound
A gynaecological ultrasound lets us see the gynaecological organs and other organs nearby. How long it takes depends on the extent of the condition, and the examination itself is almost painless.
Gynaecological ultrasound is a diagnostic examination that shows the female reproductive organs (the cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries), the ligaments of the uterus and cervix, the bladder and the distal ureters, the rectum, the lateral pelvic wall with its vessels and lymph nodes, and the peritoneum between the bladder and the uterus and between the uterus and the rectum.
It can be performed transvaginally (through the vagina) or transabdominally (through the abdomen). The transvaginal approach uses high frequency images, which gives better resolution of the organs but limited depth, so for large lesions we can add the transabdominal approach, usually performed with a full bladder.
What it can find
The examination can reveal the causes of many gynaecological complaints and conditions:
- Endometriosis, fibroids and adenomyosis.
- Cysts or tumours of the ovaries and fallopian tubes, and gynaecological cancers.
- Confirmation of an intrauterine or ectopic pregnancy.
- Monitoring of the menstrual cycle.
During the examination
Depending on the ultrasound findings, we can carry out further diagnostic procedures such as an endometrial biopsy.
The examination can cause anxiety or discomfort, so we talk it through with you beforehand. Once it has been explained, you know what to expect and feel more at ease.
