Gynaecological ultrasound
Gynaecological ultrasound provides a detailed assessment of the uterus, ovaries and other pelvic structures. It may be performed as part of a gynaecological examination or because of specific symptoms or findings.
When can a gynaecological ultrasound be useful?
Ultrasound may be helpful when assessing:
- pelvic or lower abdominal pain,
- irregular or heavy menstrual bleeding,
- abnormal bleeding,
- suspected fibroids or adenomyosis,
- suspected endometriosis,
- ovarian cysts or other ovarian findings,
- known conditions that require follow-up,
- other gynaecological concerns.
What does the examination involve?
The examination is most commonly performed transvaginally and, when appropriate, may also be performed transabdominally. Before the examination, we discuss your symptoms and the reason for the consultation. After the examination, the findings and any recommended next steps are clearly explained to you.
