Colposcopy
Colposcopy is a detailed examination of the cervix and vagina that allows cervical abnormalities to be assessed more closely than during a routine gynaecological examination.
When is colposcopy recommended?
Colposcopy is most commonly performed:
- following an abnormal PAP result,
- when HPV-related cervical changes are present,
- when a more detailed assessment of the cervix is required,
- for certain abnormalities of the vagina or external genitalia.
What does the examination involve?
The examination usually takes less than ten minutes. The cervix and vagina are examined using a colposcope, and a PAP smear or biopsy may be performed when appropriate.
