It allows a close examination of the external genitals, the vagina and the cervix in order to detect signs of disease. Colposcopy is usually recommended after an abnormal PAP smear, or for conditions of the external genitals such as lichen sclerosus.
During the examination
During the procedure we can take a cytology smear (Papanicolau, or PAP) or a tissue sample that is sent for histopathological examination (a biopsy). Both can be done without local anaesthetic.
The procedure can cause anxiety or discomfort, so we talk it through with you beforehand. Once it has been explained, you know what to expect and feel more at ease.
When colposcopy is recommended
- After an abnormal PAP smear result.
- For conditions of the external genitals such as lichen sclerosus.
- Whenever the vagina and cervix need a closer look.
